History and legends

Bled - the romantic alpine soul hidden in the middle of picturesque mountains - holds an ancient treasure: an island in the middle of an alpine lake. Its charm has made it a symbol for centuries, and guests from all over the world love to return. On the island in the middle of the lake the old Slavs worshipped Živa, the goddess of love and fertility. Later, pilgrims came to the Church of St. Mary on the island. A thousand years ago, on April 10, 1004, the town of Bled was mentioned for the first time.

At that distant time, a Roman tower already stood on the top of the rock, rising 100 metres vertically over the lake, and it is still part of the mighty castle, which today houses a museum collection. The town experienced its heyday with the Medieval pilgrims, who were replaced by the first tourists in the 19th century. The Swiss hydrotherapist Arnold Rikli discovered that the mild climate and the lake and thermal waters are a source of health and well-being. The locals supplemented the spa offer with guesthouses and hotels.

The town, which was already famous at the beginning of the 20th century as the most beautiful health resort of the then Austrian Empire, attracted the European aristocratic elite. After the Second World War, Bled was home to one of the most attractive state residences of the past regime. Many of the world's most important personalities thus enjoyed the beauties of Bled. And now, for decades, pilgrims of a new era are discovering this town.
