Professor Jean Pierre Bourguignon, president of European Research Council, to give a live interview during 8ECM
»The scientific programme should be top quality as that is what attracts people. It is also a fantastic opportunity for people to meet, and in particular, for young people to be exposed to new things and domains outside their usual expertise. Europe has to trust in itself and develop means for the next generation to take over.« (Prof. Bourguignon upon his visit to the venue of 8ECM, November 2019. Photo: WEP.)
Prof. Jean Pierre Bourguignon, currently serving as the president of ERC, is a mathematician and researcher in differential geometry who authored several acclaimed mathematical monographs. During his career, he also served as the president of the European Mathematical Society, director of the Institute des Hautes Etude Scientifiques and held many honorary academic as well as diplomatic positions.
It is the great pleasure of the organizers to announce that prof. Bourguignon will give a live interview during the 8ECM, discussing the future of mathematics and mathematical research in Europe. The interview will be conducted by prof. Günter M. Ziegler and the event will be chaired by prof. Maria J. Esteban. Live broadcast with open acess is scheduled on Friday, June 25th, 4PM.

Embracing the 8ECM at the University of Primorska, Slovenia
In only six weeks, the 8ECM will start! And at the University of Primorska we are in full anticipation of the event! I am extremely proud of our staff making this project a reality! Mathematics has played an important role in the development of our university. Mathematicians are the most propulsive research group of the University of Primorska. The group is strongly linked internationally and publishes two journals – Ars Mathematica Contemporanea and The Art of Discrete and Applied Mathematics. The 8ECM will consolidate all of the past work of UP's Department of Mathematics and once again prove the university's ambitiousness and daring character. The two driving forces of the department and the university, prof. Tomaž Pisanski and prof. Dragan Marušič, have joined our efforts and are contributing to the successes of this congress as well. During the congress, Slovenia will celebrate its 30 years of independence and I am happy that at this event, also the congress will bring together all Slovene institutions in the field of mathematics: University of Ljubljana, University of Maribor, IMFM, IJS, DMFA, SDAMS and Abelium.
The large number of registrations also enabled us to offer online access to lectures to many talented young mathematics students from all over the world!
While most of you will not be able to experience the pleasant research atmosphere on the Slovenian coast this time, we are convinced that you will find some time and visit us in the near future.
Prof. dr. Klavdija Kutnar, Rector of the University of Primorska
