Open Panels and Society Meetings

These are the Open Panels and Society Meetings that will be held under the 8th European Congress of Mathematics.

ERC Panel Tuesday, 22 June 2021, 16:00 - 17:30 (CEST)
EWM - Panel on gender balance in mathematics Tuesday, 22 June 2021, 20:00 - 21:00 (CEST)
Open Access Panel Thursday, 24 June 2021, 16:00 - 17:30 (CEST)
LMS Society Meeting and Lecture Tuesday, 22 June 2021, 17.30 - 18.30 (CEST)

ERC Panel

Chair: Maria Teresa Gonzalez Cerveron

During the first part of this session, Maria Gonzalez, the panel coordinator of the Mathematics panel, will give an overview of the different funding schemes available, as well as of the evaluation process, in order to better understand the application process. This will be complemented by the personal experiences of ERC grantees Stefanie Petermichl (CoG) and Ana Caraiani (StG).

EWM - Panel on gender balance in mathematics

Chair: Eugenie Hunsicker (Loughborough University)

The panelists will discuss the current mathematical life course and the issues with the current system that have led to the current situation regarding gender balance. This includes a debate on the challenging work required to change the attitudes in the mathematics community about what mathematical success looks like and who is capable of it.

The panelists are:

  • Shabnam Beheshti (Director of Undergraduate Studies, Queen Mary University of London)
  • Klavdija Kutnar (8ECM Organizing Committee Deputy Chair, Professor of Mathematics and rector of University of Primorska)
  • Volker Mehrmann (president of EMS)
  • Jill Pipher (past-president of AMS)
  • Carola Schönlieb (previous EWM convenor)

Open Access Panel

Chair: Volker Mehrmann

A panel discussion about the future of mathematical publishing.

We are currently in a transition period where classical publishing models for scientific results are drastically changing. Gold, diamond or green open access models or Subscribe-To-Open models are discussed and implemented, and national consortia rather than libraries are financing the access to scientific literature. The EU is pushing for open access publishing via its plan S.

Where is the future in scientific publishing in mathematics? Why are new journals founded every day? How we can control the quality of the published results? Who is going to finance all these publications?

The panelists are:

  • Thierry Bouche, Univ. Grenoble, Chair EMS Publication and Electronic Dissemination Committee
  • Andre Gaul, EMS Press
  • Tomothy Gowers, Univ. of Oxford
  • Klaus Hulek, Univ. Hannover, Editor in Chief zbmath open
  • Tomaž Pisanski, Univ. of Primorska, Univ. of Ljubljana
  • Giovanni Raneri, Editor  Elsevier Science.
  • Olaf Teschke, FIZ Karlsruhe, Vice Chair EMS Publication and Electronic Dissemination Committee
Moderator Volker Mehrmann, TU Berlin EMS

LMS Society Meeting and Lecture

Chair: Jonathan Keating

The lecture is aimed at a general mathematical audience. All interested, whether LMS members or not, are welcome to attend this event.

Programme:

5.30pm - Opening of the Society Meeting

5.40pm - A lecture by James Maynard (University of Oxford)

Title: Approximating real numbers by fractions

Abstract: How well can you approximate real numbers by rationals with denominators coming from a given set? Although this old question has applications in many areas, in general this question seems impossibly hard - we don’t even know whether e+pi is rational or not!

If you allow for a tiny number of bad exceptions, then a beautiful dichotomy occurs - either almost everything can be approximated or almost nothing! I’ll talk about this problem and recent joint work with Dimitris Koukoulopoulos which classifies when these options occur, answering an old question of Duffin and Schaeffer. This relies on a fun blend of different ideas, including ergodic theory, analytic number theory and graph theory.
