The ERC's mission is to encourage the highest quality research in Europe through competitive funding and to support investigator-driven frontier research across all fields, on the basis of scientific excellence.

The ERC will be present virtually during the congress. We have prepared an ERC panel and Q&A sessions for you:

  • 22 June 2021 from 4pm to 5.30pm: ERC panel
The discussion will include an overview of the different funding schemes available, as well as of the evaluation process. Anna caraiani and Stefanie Petermichl will join Maria Gonzales (PE1 panel coordinator) to give their experience as grantees and panel member.

The ERC complements other funding activities in Europe such as those of the national research funding agencies, and is a flagship component of Horizon Europe, the European Union's Research Framework Programme for 2021 to 2027.

Being 'investigator-driven', or 'bottom-up', in nature, the ERC approach allows researchers to identify new opportunities and directions in any field of research, rather than being led by priorities. This ensures that funds are channeled into new and promising areas of research with a greater degree of flexibility.

Spotlight on ERC projects: Mathematics

INTERVIEW: László Lovász and the beauty of maths

Distinguished mathematician László Lovász, from the Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary, was recently awarded the Abel Prize together with computer scientist Avi Wigderson. The prize recognizes contributions to the field of mathematics that are of extraordinary depth and influence, and is often compared to a “maths Nobel”. We took this opportunity to speak to Professor Lovász about his career as well as his current ERC Synergy Grant project.

To read the full interview with Prof. László Lovász, please visit the ERC website HERE.

Mathematical Mavericks

Maria Gonzalez, working as a scientific officer in the Mathematics panel, tells us about one of her favourite funded projects. Find the presentation on THIS LINK.

How the ERC transformed science

Our grantees – 10 000 and counting – are making a real impact on people’s lives, expanding the frontiers of human knowledge, transforming research through interdisciplinary collaborations, achieving scientific breakthroughs that drive innovation.
