The Council of the European Mathematical Society voted on the organisers of the European Congress of Mathematics 2020 on 16 July 2016 and it supported the Portoroz bid. 

The bid was presented to the counsillors by the Dean of UP FAMNIT, assoc. prof. Klavdija Kutnar, PhD and rector of the University of Primorska and chairman of the Slovenian Rectors' Conference, prof. Dragan Marušič, PhD. 

The delegates saw our potential and supported the Slovene congress organisers with 45 votes in favour. 33 counsillors supported the counter-bid launched by Sevilla. 

Prof. Dragan Marušič added: "This is a fantastic achievement of Slovene mathematics and science in general. So far Slovenia never hosted a similar event in the past. Today, Slovene science opened even more into the world. 

We have a unique opportunity in the next 4 years to further support Slovenia and its sciences in Europe and the world."
