Assuring equal opportunities

A sub-committee for equal opportunities has been formed

On their last meeting on 1 December 2016, the organising committee pledged to assure equal opportunities to all mathematicians and fight against any form of discrimination, when it comes to congress participation and participation in mathematical research.

To assure that, a sub-committee for equal opportunities has been formed. It will be chaired by Karin Cvetko Vah, a Slovene mathematician and novelist. Her book Opravičilo človeka (Apologies of a man) was published in 2014. In the book Karin Cvetko Vah critically addressed modern society and wrote about different depriviliged groups of people and injustices happening in today's world.

Combining her mathematical skills and sensitiveness to discrimination and injustice, she is definitely the right choice for the position.

Another two members, joining the sub-committee for equal opportunities, are Jasna Prezelj and Primož Potočnik, both members of the local organising committee.

The sub-committee will work with national societies, organise round tables on discrimination in mathematics, bridge communication with organisations and committees working in the area of equal opportunities in mathematics and try to assure equal participation of all mathematicians.
